Global Communication    " IMT - 2000 "

What represents the IMT-2000 ? So many engineers who are involved in the standardization of IMT-2000 viewed it as " I AM TIRED in 2000", which expresses the difficulty of standardization and development of the 3rd generation mobile communication IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications). IMT-2000 represents the following meaning; 1) the service will start around year 2000, 2) the frequency band is around 2000MHz, and 3) the maximum data rate is around 2000kbps. Around 10 years ago, the necessity of the world globalization of mobile telecommunication has been discussed. And market expectations for third generation mobile radio systems show an increasing demand for a wide range of services from voice to low, high and advanced data rate services to support mobile multimedia. Therefore, there are three strong reasons for developing 3G systems; multimedia, high capacity and a global standard. This systems aim to support a wide range of bearer services with up to at least 144 kbps in vehicular, 384 kbps in outdoor-to indoor and 2Mbps in indoor. For the transfer of image information of 1Mbyte, 14min. is necessary at a 9.6kbps user rate in current second generation system, but the transmission time will be significantly shortened to 4sec. with a 2 Mbps transfer rate.

The end of last year, Ministry of Information and Communication in Korea announced the two licenses for the IMT-2000 carriers, KT-IMT and SK-IMT. Both carriers are going to deploy their IMT-2000 system with the WCDMA multiple access method (or called it asynchronous system since their system not dependent on the GPS(global positioning system)). One more license is reserved for the cdma2000 (synchronous system dependent on GPS for the time references). Overall services are expecting in around 2002-2003 and even Japan will start their services in May 2001 as the world first WCDMA service.

We did not even start IMT-2000 service, yet. The researchers who are leading the world communication technologies start their research on the 4th generation system or "beyond system for IMT-2000" for the maximum transmission rate as the 10M-100Mbps in 2010. In near future, the communication system which provides "any-time", "any-where", "any-one" and "any kind information" will be deployed. Thus we will get the freedom from the wired line in our communication life.
